You are not welcome!

This place is about timeline. And it`s dedicated to the University of Greenwich course named «Timetravel or Wish You Be There». This blog is a real proof that design in past was really funky and strong, how it`s changed with time and how most of the styles and ideas dissapeared. And our process and research work for the course.

1996
Kosovo War between ethnic-Albanian separatists and Yugoslav military and Serb paramilitary forces in Kosovo begin in 1996 and escalates in 1998 with increasing reports of atrocities taking place. In 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) led by the United States launches air attacks against Yugoslavia. The war ends when the Yugoslav government submits to allow NATO and later UN peacekeeping forces to take control of Kosovo.

1994
The First Chechen War (1994 – 1996) was fought between Russia and Chechnya from 1994 to 1996 and resulted in Chechnya's de facto independence from Russia as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
After the initial campaign of 1994–1995, culminating in the devastating Battle of Grozny, Russian federal forces attempted to control the mountainous area of Chechnya but were set back by Chechen guerrilla warfare and raids on the flatlands in spite of Russia's overwhelming manpower, weaponry, and air support. The resulting widespread demoralization of federal forces, and the almost universal opposition of the Russian public to the brutal conflict, led Boris Yeltsin's government to declare a ceasefire in 1996 and sign a peace treaty a year later.

1993
Dissolution of Czechoslovakia into Czech Republic and Slovakia,
Czechoslovakia ,Slovak after 1990 was a sovereign state in Central Europe that existed from October 1918 (upon declaring its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire) until 1992 (with a government-in-exile during the World War II period). On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia

1993
The European Community becomes the European Union on January 1, 1993. This is one of the three pillars of the European Union (EU) created under the Maastricht Treaty (1992). It is based upon the principle of supranationalism and has its origins in the European Economic Community, the predecessor of the European Union. If the Treaty of Lisbon comes into force, the EU's pillar structure will be abolished. This means that the European Community, and the other two pillars, will be merged and cease to exist as separate entities.

1991
Break up of the Soviet Union in 1991. On December 8, 1991, the presidents of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus signed the Belavezha Accords which declared the Soviet Union dissolved and established the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), in its place. On December 25, 1991 the Soviet Union is officially dissolved, effectively ending the Cold War. United States becomes sole world superpower.
From 1945 until dissolution in 1991(a period known as the Cold War) the Soviet Union and the United States of America were the two world superpowers that dominated the global agenda of economic policy, foreign affairs, military operations, cultural exchange, scientific advancements including the pioneering of space exploration, and sports (including the Olympic Games and various world championships).

1990
Margaret Thatcher who had been the United Kingdom's Prime Minister since 1979 resigned as Prime Minister on November 22nd 1990
Thatcher's tenure as Prime Minister was the longest since that of Lord Salisbury and the longest continuous period in office since Lord Liverpool in the early 19th century. She was the first woman to lead a major political party in the UK, and the first of only three women to hold any of the four great offices of state. She currently has a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire, which entitles her to sit in the House of Lords.

1925
Adolf Hitler publlshed the book Mein Kampf (English: My Struggle/My Battle). It combines elements of autobiography with an exposition of Hitler's National Socialist political ideology. Volume 1 of Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and volume 2 in 1926.

1922
Amilcare Andrea Mussolini becames the Prime Minister of Italy in 1922 and began using the title Il Duce by 1925. After 1936, his official title was "His Excellency Benito Mussolini, Head of Government, Duce of Fascism, and Founder of the Empire".He created and held the supreme military rank of First Marshal of the Empire along with King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, which gave him and the King joint supreme control over the military of Italy. Mussolini remained in power until he was replaced in 1943; for a short period after this until his death he was the leader of the Italian Social Republic.
Mussolini was among the founders of Italian fascism, which included elements of nationalism, corporativism, national syndicalism, expansionism, social progress and anti-communism in combination with censorship of subversives and state propaganda Benito. In the years following his creation of the fascist ideology, Mussolini influenced, or achieved admiration from, a wide variety of political figures.

1922
The Russian Civil War (1917–1923) ended, witch was a multi-party war that occurred within the former Russian Empire after the Russian provisional government collapsed and the Bolshevik party assumed power in Petrograd (St. Petersburg).
The principal fighting occurred between the Bolshevik Red Army, often in temporary alliance with other leftist pro-revolutionary groups, and the forces of the White Army, the loosely-allied anti-Bolshevik forces. Many foreign armies warred against the Red Army, notably the Allied Forces, yet many volunteer foreigners fought in both sides of the Russian Civil War. Other nationalist and regional political groups also participated in the war, including the Ukrainian nationalist Green Army, the Ukrainian anarchist Black Army and Black Guards, and warlords such as Ungern von Sternberg.
The most intense fighting took place from 1918 to 1920. In Soviet historiography the end of the Civil War is dated to October 25, 1922 when the Red Army occupied Vladivostok, previously held by the Provisional Priamur Government. The last enclave of the White Forces was the Ayano-Maysky District on the Pacific coast, where General Anatoly Pepelyayev did not capitulate until June 17, 1923.

1920
The League of Nations (LoN) was a supranational organization founded as a result of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919–1920. At its greatest extent from 28 September 1934 to the 23 February 1935, it had 58 members. The League's goals included disarmament, preventing war through collective security, settling disputes between countries through negotiation, diplomacy and improving global quality of life. The diplomatic philosophy behind the League represented a fundamental shift in thought from the preceding hundred years. The League lacked its own armed force and so depended on the Great Powers to enforce its resolutions, keep to economic sanctions which the League ordered, or provide an army, when needed, for the League to use. However, they were often reluctant to do so. Sanctions could also hurt the League members imposing the sanctions and given the pacifist attitude following World War I, countries were reluctant to take military action. Benito Mussolini stated that "The League is very well when sparrows shout, but no good at all when eagles fall out."

1920
The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers (Russia, France and Great Britain). It was signed on 28 June 1919, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, one of the events that triggered the start of the war. Although the armistice signed on 11 November 1918 ended the actual fighting, it took six months of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude the peace treaty. Of the many provisions in the treaty, one of the most important and controversial required Germany and its allies to accept responsibility for causing the war and to disarm, make substantial territorial concessions and pay reparations to certain countries that had formed the Entente powers. The result of these competing and sometimes incompatible goals among the victors was a compromise that nobody was satisfied with. Germany was neither pacified nor conciliated, which, in retrospect, did not bode well for the future of Germany, Europe, or the world as a whole.

Advertisement history

A Coke ad in McPherson, Kansas is still on an old building that has survived many years. Coke sold them a huge amount of paint so in the future they would not have to buy any more touch up paint for the years to come. It’s fought Coke still has some paint kept away so that the original advertisement never wears or looses paint.
Coca Cola has made a major impact on American culture and is often credited for the ideas of many modern inventions like ‘Santa Claus’, an old man in red and white with a white beard and red garments. However even though Coke started the trend promoting the image in the 1930’s in their winter campaigns, it was already a common trend before they started doing that. In fact Coca Cola was not even the first soda drink company to use the modern day image of Santa Claus for advertising it was actually ‘White Rock Beverages’, they used it for ginger ale in 1923 after using it to sell mineral water in 1915.

1920s … Bottling overtakes fountain sales
As the 1920s dawned, more than 1,000 Coca-Cola bottlers were operating in the U.S. Their ideas and zeal fueled steady growth. Six-bottle cartons were a huge hit after their 1923 introduction. A few years later, open-top metal coolers became the forerunners of automated vending machines. By the end of the 1920s, bottle sales of Coca-Cola exceeded fountain sales.

History of graphic design

The phrase graphic design is thought to be in a debate because it was said Richard Guyatt a British designer was the first to create the term “graphic design” but then other sources say William Addison Dwiggins an American book designer in the early 20th century was the person who invented the term “graphic design”.
This been said in the early London Underground scene the modern era of graphics specially fonts was designed by Edward Johnston in 1916.
Graphic design really took off in the 1920s with the constructivism development, this saw artistic designs like buildings, theater sets, posters, fabrics, clothing, furniture, logos, menus etc.
A designer called Jan Tschichold laid down the principles of modern typography in his 1928 book ‘New Typography’. He repeatedly talked about his philosophy, in his book he described it as being fascistic, saying that it was still influential.
Tschichold and the Bauhaus typographers such as Herbert Bayer and Lazszlo Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky are the masterminds of graphic design it is heavily suggested, as we know today. These are the people who pioneered and created production methods and techniques and stylistic materials throughout the twentieth century.
The coming years so graphic design in modern style growing and expanding wide, the coming of world war 2 saw production for advertising and packaging in the American economy.
The relocation of the German Bauhaus School of design to Chicago in 1937 paved the way for massive production of “modern” architecture and design.
Recognizable names in mid century modern design include Adrain Fruiger, designer of typefaces ‘Univers’ and ‘Frutiger’, Paul Rand was active from the late 1930s until his death in 1996 applied the principles of the Bauhaus when designing popular advertising logos. He helped to create a different and unique American approach to European methods all this while pioneering the subset of graphic design better known as corporate identity. With the help of Josef MullerBrockmann they designed posters in a creative and visual way in between the 1950s and 60s era.
This is how graphic design grew and this is what makes or expresses how people see it to be, a form of art?.....

Stenberg Brothers

In the 1920s and early 1930s were a revolutionary period for the graphic arts throughout Europe. A drastic change took place in the way graphic designers worked that was a direct consequence of experimentation in both the fine and the applied arts. Not only did the formal vocabulary of graphic design change, but also the designer's perception of self. The concept of the designer as "constructor"—or, as the Dadaist Raoul Hausmann preferred, "monteur" (mechanic or engineer)—marked a paradigmatic shift within the field, from an essentially illustrative approach to one of assemblage and nonlinear narrativity. This new idea of assembling preexisting images, primarily photographs, into something new freed design from its previous dependence on realism. The subsequent use of collage—a defining element of modern graphic design—enabled the graphic arts to become increasingly non-objective in character.

Eric Gill

In 1920 British typographer Eric Gill designed the most successful typeface. San serif typeface was designed to try and embrace the traditional techniques not actually praising the power of using machines, the type features clear, geometric lines like the Johnson san face, which Gills additionally assisted. The Gills san type was more common than the Johnston sans type it was more stylish and fluid, this is how it quickly became the number one choice for British publishers wanting a basic recognizable look. In 1932 the Gills Sans types were used for the London and eastern Northern railway, this was because the types represented importance and simplicity.

Constructivism

Constructivism. International Constructivism refers to the optimistic, abstract art that emerged in Europe in the 1920's. Constructivism was an invention of the Russian avant-garde that found adherents across the continent. Germany was the site of the most Constructivist activity outside of the Soviet Union (especially as home to Walter Gropius's Bauhaus, a progressive art and design school sympathetic to the movement) but Constructivist ideas were also carried to other art centres, like Paris, London, and eventually the United States...

Choosing color for the subject

One of the most important things in design, is obviously color. By using the color it often can speak for design by him self. In this case no intelectual color choice has been made, the only reason it`s been chosen as it is — to make the timeline more interesting.

Timeline picture face control

The more important is the look of a timeline, not to do it very complicated and hard to read and understand at the same time. The images have to be funny, speaking for them selfs, and the serious or scary at the same time. Any type of image is welcome except being simple, having ordinary condition or look.

Arguing about blog header

anton,

i agree that ur design is 'technically' better & more simple, however, the person & style does not represent our era!!

Now my Image;

1st- this was a basic idea/design (top) to show u which i could easily fix!!
2nd- the 'decoration' & fonts r relevent 2 this era (20's - art deco!!)
